How Do We Use The Bible In Everyday Life?

Practical Uses for The Bible in Everyday Life

Although it was written centuries ago in a world much different than ours, the Bible remains applicable to our daily lives as Christians. As our world becomes flooded with books, podcasts, and even sermons from well-meaning pastors, we must remember that our first resource should be the Bible. However, many new Christians wonder how the Bible is practical for use in daily life.

So, how do we use the Bible in everyday life? There are many ways we can use the Bible in everyday life. A few of the most important daily uses for the Bible include:

  • Learning about God’s character
  • Encouragement
  • Guidance
  • Courage to face unknowns
  • Realigning our priorities
  • Reminding us of truth
  • Avoiding the temptation of sin
  • Reaching others for Christ

Of course, these are just a few of the many ways the Bible can be used in everyday life. As Christians, we must learn to turn to the Bible in every situation – knowing that it should be our primary source of truth and guidance.

In this post, we will take a closer look at the many ways we can use the Bible in everyday life. We will also discuss several ways to incorporate the Bible into your daily life, developing a habit of turning to Scripture regardless of the situation in which you find yourself.

The Bible Teaches Us About God’s Character

Believers who had the privilege to walk alongside Christ during His time on earth learned of God’s character through His son. Today, we are given the Bible. As Christians, we are called to become more like Christ every day. How are we to become more like Him if we do not know about his character?

In the Bible, we learn about the nature and character of God. We learn about attributes of His character such as patience, true love, compassion, faithfulness, grace, and justice. By learning of these attributes, we can use the Bible to grow in our everyday lives as we strive to become more Christlike.

The Bible is a Source of Encouragement

Using the Bible in Daily LifePerhaps the most common way to use the Bible in everyday life is as a source of encouragement and inspiration. The Bible is full of encouraging stories, verses, and lessons that apply to our lives even today.

Verses like Deuteronomy 31:6 encourage us with truth such as, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

James 1:2-4 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

Regardless of the situation in which you find yourself, there is encouragement to be found in the pages of Scripture.

The Bible Provides Guidance

Are you facing a decision in life that has you perplexed? While the Bible may not address that specific topic, it does provide practical guidance in daily life. By reading the Bible and learning more about the Will of God, we can more confidently make decisions that are influenced by His calling on our lives.

The Bible Gives Us Courage to Face Unknowns

We all face unknowns. From what will happen if you pursue a certain career field to the possible persecution you may face for your beliefs – unknowns in life can fill us with fear. Throughout the Bible, we are called to be bold and courageous, knowing that God is at our side.

The Bible Helps Us to Realign Our Priorities

Another way we can use the Bible in everyday life is to realign our priorities with the Will of God. How do we know the Will of God? This is a question that many Christians pose at various points in their faith journey. The best way to know the Will of God and realign our priorities with His Will is through the study of Scripture.

The Bible Reminds Us of Truth

In a world that is constantly altering what “truth” is, it is comforting to know that the Bible is the source of absolute truth. While we may feel like the world is faltering around us, we can turn to the Bible in our daily lives to be reminded of the truth.

The Bible Helps Us to Avoid Temptation to Sin

Regardless of how long you have been a Christian, we are all tempted to sin. By storing up God’s Word in our hearts, the Bible helps us avoid the temptation to sin. This is just one of the many reasons why it is so important to memorize Scripture – something that we will discuss later in this post.

The Bible Helps Us Reach Others for Christ

Finally, the Bible is used in our everyday lives to help us reach others for Christ. Our primary goal in life should be to lead others to Him, sharing the incredible gift of salvation. Through the Bible, we learn the importance of this calling.

Ways to Incorporate the Bible in Your Everyday Life

We now know several of the ways we can use the Bible in everyday life. But, how do you practically incorporate Scripture into daily living? Fortunately, there are several ways to do so.

Read the Bible Daily

As Christians, we must immerse ourselves in the Bible daily. Whether it is one verse, one chapter, or one book of the Bible, any time spent in God’s Word is incredibly beneficial. Only by reading, studying, and seeing to understand the Bible will we be able to practically apply it to our lives.

For many Christians, establishing a habit of daily Bible reading is quite a struggle. However, just like any habit, dedication and consistency will pay off. Make it a goal to read your Bible every day for a month. Find a few friends to participate in this challenge and hold each other accountable.

Set a specific time or place in which you will read your Bible each day, something that will fit into your schedule. Many Christians find it valuable to read their Bibles over breakfast each morning as it helps them maintain a healthy mindset for the day ahead. Whenever you choose to read your Bible, pray that God will open your mind and heart to what He has for you.

Memorize Scripture

Reading the Bible should not be the only way that you engage in Scripture daily. As adults, we put far too little emphasis on the memorization of Scripture. Many Bible verses exhort us to memorize Scripture.

Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” And in Joshua 1:8 we read, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

As children, we memorize Scripture in Sunday School. However, as adults, this practice often falls to the wayside. While we are blessed as Americans to have access to the Bible in physical and digital form, this may not always be the case.

Make it a goal to memorize one Bible verse each week to store up the Word of God in your heart. In doing so, you will be able to use it more practically in your daily life.

Place Bible Verses in Prominent Places

One of the best ways to remind yourself to turn to the Bible in everyday life is to place Bible verses in prominent places of your home or life. If you spend significant time driving, write a few verses on notecards to keep in your car. If you find yourself spending time in the kitchen, jot down a few verses to place above the kitchen sink.

By placing Scripture in front of you when you may need it most, you will be reminded to use the Bible in your daily life.

Refer to Scripture Often

Are you facing a challenging decision? Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, or self-doubt? Maybe you are unsure of how to prepare for the next chapter of your life?

Turn to the Bible! Make it a habit to refer to Scripture often – both when you need insight and inspiration and when you simply need comfort. By making this a habit, we will be more prone to utilize the Bible in our everyday lives.

In Conclusion

As Christians in America, we are currently blessed to be able to carry our Bibles with us virtually anywhere. We are not restricted as to how we can practically implement the Bible in our daily lives. However, our brothers and sisters around the world can no longer say the same. To them, the Bible is a lifeline.

Let us not take for granted the great freedoms with which we have been blessed. Let us learn to incorporate the Bible more fully into our daily lives as we seek to become more like Christ and bring others to him.
